Early exposure to working together with various age groups is essential to the formation of a productive adult. To maximize cooperation and mutual learning, we combine grade levels into singular studios. Each studio is capped at 15 students and 1-2 teachers. Grade levels are intermingled, giving younger students an opportunity to learn from older students, and older students the opportunity to take leadership roles.

Our Curriculum

  • At Pathfinders Academy, we believe in learning by doing. Therefore, hands-on projects are a daily component of the curriculum. Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to infuse concepts in science, social studies, STEM, art, writing, and mathematics into immersive hands-on experiences. The projects, aligned with state standards for each student’s grade level, are designed to help take the students beyond the textbook pages and bring the learning to life.

Hands-on projects aren't just fun; they are the cornerstone of our educational approach. They encourage collaboration, persistence, and adaptability—critical skills for success in an ever-evolving world. We empower our students to articulate their ideas through public speaking—bridging hands-on learning with effective communication.

Imagine this: student groups form their very own "publishing houses." Focusing on the topic of The Battle of Gettysburg, each house embarks on crafting a comprehensive book about the battle. Within these groups, every student delves into researching and writing about distinct facets of the battle, ensuring a diverse and thorough exploration of the topic. They blend various writing styles to create a rich and informative book on The Battle of Gettysburg.

Bringing their narrative to life, students illustrate their book and utilize technology to design an engaging and reader-friendly layout. They then self-publish their creation. As a team, they produce a brief commercial clip, showcasing their book and targeting family and friends as potential readers. They take book orders, and the group that generates the most sales emerges victorious in this challenge. The project culminates in a celebratory evening event with family and friends—an exclusive opportunity to meet the authors. Each group presents their masterpiece, followed by a special book signing session, adding a personal touch to the entire endeavor.

Or this: Students explore the intersection of STEM and history in the LEGO boat challenge. Students delve into the construction of the Panama Canal, crafting historical fiction narratives centered on its creation. As they design LEGO boats, they seamlessly integrate mathematical concepts into their designs. From calculating measurements for width and depth of the canal, to estimating buoyancy and experimenting with weight distribution, they mirror the engineering complexities of the canal's construction. Putting theory to the test, the boats are evaluated in water, where students showcase the applied mathematics and science principles vital in successfully floating their creations and being able to traverse the canal. To culminate their study of this topic, students present their historical fiction pieces to the group, defending the historical aspects woven into their narratives. This project not only hones their STEM skills, but also nurtures a deeper understanding and appreciation for the historical context of the Panama Canal’s development.

  • At Pathfinders Academy, we utilize adaptive software that transforms the way students engage with core subjects such as mathematics, phonics/grammar, spelling, and reading. Traditional classroom learning once prevailed over technology-based education. However, the emergence of adaptive software has transformed tech-based learning into an incredibly effective tool, ensuring each child learns within their zone of proximal development, consistently challenged and supported.

This software adapts to each child’s unique learning pace, enabling them to progress at their individual speed and ability. No longer do students need to wait idly in a classroom while others catch up, or waste time on problems they have already mastered. Instead, the adaptive software adjusts to a student’s mistakes, offering targeted problems to correct misconceptions instantly. This personalized approach, akin to having a private tutor for every student, surpasses the attention a teacher can provide to each individual.

At Pathfinder’s Academy, our approach integrates adaptive software seamlessly into the learning process. Students are introduced to new concepts in small group settings with a teacher and then they utilize the adaptive software to reinforce and practice those concepts independently. This dynamic combination empowers students to thrive and succeed at their own pace, maximizing their potential in every subject.

  • Pathfinders Academy aims to raise a generation of critical and rational thinkers. One method of fostering critical thinking is through the form of Socratic questions. Teachers become facilitators, guiding discussions rather than solely imparting information. Students are actively engaged, asking and answering questions, exploring ideas, and challenging each other’s viewpoints.

The classroom atmosphere is one of curiosity and inquiry. Instead of simply receiving answers, students are prompted to think critically, examine assumptions, and articulate their reasoning. The focus is on dialogue, with students respectfully debating and exchanging thoughts. The Socratic method of teaching cultivates an environment where curiosity is nurtured, and students develop the confidence to inquire, analyze, and form their opinions rather than passively absorbing information. Ultimately, Socratic questioning equips students with lifelong skills that go beyond the classroom, preparing them to face hard challenges in life with rationality and logic.

  • Reading

We recognize that literacy is the cornerstone of success across all aspects of life. That's why our dedication to fostering reading skills takes center stage. Similar to our approach to writing, our students engage in daily reading activities. This includes independent reading sessions, paired reading exercises, and personalized one-on-one guidance from teachers. By prioritizing a diverse range of reading experiences, we empower our students to become confident and proficient readers, setting a strong foundation for their academic and personal growth.

    Writing

At Pathfinders Academy, cultivating exceptional writing skills is a key component of our curriculum. The ability to clearly communicate and express oneself in writing is essential to a student’s success in life. Therefore, students write daily.

We utilize various methods to refine students’ writing skills. Students receive comprehensive rubrics to self-assess their work, guiding them in pinpointing specific skills for improvement. Encouraging collaborative learning, our students engage in peer reviews, offering constructive feedback to further polish their compositions. Students also regularly meet one-on-one with a teacher to discuss their writing, receive individualized feedback, and track their progress. This tailored approach ensures that each student receives dedicated support to flourish as a confident and articulate writer.

  • The art program at Pathfinders Academy is led by a published children’s illustrator, bringing real-world expertise to our students. We believe that creativity is not just about art—it is a skill that carries over into other disciplines and walks of life. Learning to think creatively in art class has a ripple effect, enhancing problem-solving skills that extend into a student’s future career path, whether that be accounting, or entrepreneurship, or the medical field. It is about more than brushstrokes; it is about fostering a mindset that looks at the world from different angles, cultivating a creative perspective that enriches how students approach most aspects of life from handling relationships to approaching challenges in the workplace. From wood craftsmanship to sculpting in clay, from 2-D drawings to vibrant oil paintings, our curriculum serves as a direct pathway to nurturing creative minds that thrive in every aspect of life.

  • Guided by a personal trainer and health coach, Pathfinders Academy's Physical Education (PE) program empowers students to proactively manage their physical well-being. A pivotal part of our curriculum, PE holds significant importance as research demonstrates that enhanced physical fitness and regular exercise positively impact cognitive abilities, uplift moods, and bolster overall health, directly influencing learning capacity.

Within our PE program, students maintain personal fitness journals, craft and execute customized fitness plans tailored to their unique needs and body types, and acquire essential knowledge about nutritious eating habits to effectively fuel their bodies. This holistic approach equips students with tools not just for physical fitness but also for a lifetime of healthy choices.

  • Students engage in online Spanish lessons, connecting regularly with a native Spanish speaker for practice. This interactive approach allows them to hone their language skills authentically.

There’s no “standard” kid.

So, why have “standard” testing?

At Pathfinder's Academy we believe that grades offer only a limited glimpse into a child's success, often falling short of capturing the full spectrum of their achievements. Therefore, we adopt diverse measures to assess student accomplishments. We assess competency individually and help your student reach full mastery in their core subjects. Each student receives a portfolio that serves as an up-to-date record of their progress. While we do not put an emphasis on standardized testing, we do have benchmark testing once a year to ensure that our students are achieving at national norms or higher.
